Following the resumption of diplomatic relations between them on 3 October 1988, both States proclaimed their willingness to resolve the dispute over the Strip by peaceful means..."   • MINURCA - Central African Republic -- (April 1998 – February 2000) MINURCA was deployed in April 1998 to assist in maintaining and enhancing security and stability in Bangui and vicinity; supervise, control storage, and monitor the disposition of weapons retrieved in disarmament exercise; assist in capacity-building of national police; provide advice and technical support for legislative elections.   • SIERRA LEONE - UNOMSIL -- (July 1998 - October 1999) UNOMSIL was established in July 1998 to monitor the military and security situation in Sierra Leone, as well as the disarmament and demobilization of former combatants. It was also asked to assist in monitoring respect for international humanitarian law. UNOMSIL was terminated on 22 October 1999, when the Security Council authorized deployment of a new and significantly larger peacekeeping operation -- the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).   • UNAMIR - Rwanda -- (October 1993 – March 1996) UNAMIR was originally established to help implement the Arusha Peace Agreement signed by the Rwandese parties on 4 August 1993. UNAMIR's mandate and strength were adjusted on a number of occasions in the face of the tragic events of the genocide and the changing situation in the country.   • UNOMUR - UGANDA-RWANDA -- (June 1993 - September 1994) UNOMUR was established to monitor the border between Uganda and Rwanda and verify that no military assistance was being provided across it. While the tragic turn of events in Rwanda in April 1994 prevented UNOMUR from fully implementing its mandate, the Mission played a useful role as a confidence-building mechanism.   • UNOSOM I - SOMALIA -- (April 1992 - March 1993) UNOSOM I was established to monitor the ceasefire in Mogadishu and escort deliveries of humanitarian supplies to distribution centres in the city. The mission's mandate and strength were later enlarged to enable it to protect humanitarian convoys and distribution centres throughout Somalia.   • UNOSOM II - SOMALIA -- (March 1993 - March 1995) UNOSOM II was established in March 1993 to take appropriate action, including enforcement measures, to establish throughout Somalia a secure environment for humanitarian assistance. To that end, UNOSOM II was to complete, through disarmament and reconciliation, the task begun by the Unified Task Force for the restoration of peace, stability, law and order.   • UNTAG - Namibia -- (April 1989 – March 1990) UNTAG was established to assist the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to ensure the early independence of Namibia through free and fair elections under the supervision and control of the United Nations, and to carry out a number of other duties.   • US OKs Peacekeepers to the Ivory Coast -- (February 17, 2004) After initially opposing the deployment of UN peacekeepers to war-ravaged Ivory Coast, the US has reversed its decision and asked Congress for approval. In light of this, the current Security Council president, Wang Guangya, has expressed hope that the UN will approve a peacekeeping force before the end of the month, when the mandate of the current UN mission and the French and African peacekeepers expires.
