Pollution : Oil Spills

  • It's Not So Slick When Oil Ends Up in the Sea -- About 29 million gallons of petroleum enters the oceans off North America each year, shows a new study by the National Research Council. The report finds that about 85 percent of that pollution can be blamed not on massive oil spills, but on the lesser amounts released by airplanes, swept into polluted rivers and from the largest culprits: recreational boats and runoff from the land. • Exxon Valdez oil still harmful, U.S. studies say -- Small oil patches left from the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill are still releasing toxins that harm sea life, government scientists said Tuesday. Studies by the National Marine Fisheries Service found toxins continuing to flow from lingering crude oil lodged in beaches long after the Exxon supertanker disgorged 11 million gallons of its cargo, causing the worst tanker spill in U.S. waters. • Is the U.S. prepared for a major oil spill in its waters? -- "In the wake of November's massive oil spill off the coast of Spain that continues to despoil hundreds of miles of undeveloped shoreline, disrupt vast fisheries, and jeopardize the livelihoods of the people who depend on them, the European Union has begun to crack down on old, poorly maintained, single-hulled tankers like the sunken "Prestige." Meanwhile, what is the U.S. doing to protect its waters?" (Added: 27-May-2003 Hits: 691 Rating: 10.00 Votes: 1) Rate It
  • Ocean oil pollution blamed on US rivers and boats -- The vast majority of the 29 million gallons of petroleum that flow into U.S. coastal waters each year comes from polluted rivers, small boats and jet skis, and can't be blamed on well-publicized oil spills, a report from the National Academy of Sciences said yesterday. • Oil and water don't mix! (Canadian article) -- "Although a majority of British Columbians are opposed to lifting the ban on oil and gas drilling off Canada's Pacific coast, the federal government has decided to review the issue." (Added: 23-May-2003 Hits: 410 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It
  • The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill: How Much Oil Remains? -- The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska, released a minimum of 11 million gallons of Alaskan crude oil into one of the largest and most productive estuaries in North America. During the summer of that year, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) estimated that 149 km of shoreline in Prince William Sound were heavily oiled and 459 km were at least lightly oiled. A year later a survey showed oiling had decreased 73 percent. (Added: 28-May-2003 Hits: 444 Rating: 6.50 Votes: 2) Rate It
