Ocean Energy : Thermal and Geothermal Energy

  • Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion -- "The oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface. This makes them the world's largest solar energy collector. On an average day, 23 million square miles of seas absorb an amount of solar radiation equal to 250 billion barrels of oil. If less than one-tenth of one percent of this solar energy could be converted into electric power, it would supply more than 20 times the total amount of electricity consumed in the US on any given day." • Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Act -- The Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion established a licensing program for facilities that would convert thermal gradients in the ocean into electricity. This site contains a legislative summary and full text. (Added: 27-May-2003 Hits: 369 Rating: 4.00 Votes: 3) Rate It
  • Tapping seawater in energy experiment -- "The world's most ambitious experiment to turn seawater into electricity is underway in India. The experiment, if successful, would mark a big step toward economically viable production of clean energy by tapping the temperature difference between the sun-heated water on the sea surface and cold deep seawater."
